October Update Space Janitor

We spent the first half of October to prepare for the Paris Game Biz. I made a Pitch Deck, contacted possible publishers and we tried to get a playable demo together. 

The whole process was very time consuming and took my mind away from making games and towards selling games, which is a totally different thing. But also my job I guess.

So then I went to Paris and got a chance to pitch our game to a total of six publishers who were willing to meet with me. It was stressful, but I walked away with quite a few learnings:

1. Our hook is clear. Space Janitor is a concept people tend to get pretty quickly and they are generally excited about the idea.
2. Ok, but it is fun? – was the phrase that followed immediately after. Sadly our playable demo was not fun – which I knew in advance – but it sparked a lot of discussion of how the game could be fun.
3. Gameplay is everything! Our mission for the next four months is clear. Make the gameplay fun and then circle back to publishers that were interested.
4. Find reference-games that prove your game can succeed that are no older than 2 years. I used FTL and Papers, please in my pitch as comparable titles and while these games are great and widely known they are also a bit old and the video game industry was a whole different beast back then. 
5. Make a great trailer! A trailer is great to just show people if you have five or ten minutes and helps greatly to get your foot in the door. After that you need to follow up with a good playable of course.
